How to Use the Calories Burned Calculator
This calculator uses Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) values to estimate calories burned during physical activities. MET represents the energy cost of activities as a multiple of your resting metabolic rate - for example, an activity with a MET value of 3.0 burns three times as many calories as sitting at rest. The formula used is: Calories Burned = MET × Weight (kg) × Duration (hours). The calculator includes over 200 activities with scientifically validated MET values from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities, ensuring accurate estimations for everything from household chores to competitive sports.

Higher intensity activities have higher MET values and burn more calories per minute
Understanding your calorie burn helps optimize workout efficiency and supports weight management goals. The calculator accounts for intensity variations - exercising at higher intensity can increase calorie burn by 20-40% above standard MET values, while lower intensity reduces it proportionally. Fat burning is estimated assuming that approximately 70% of calories burned during moderate exercise come from fat oxidation (roughly 0.13 grams of fat per calorie). Keep in mind that individual factors like fitness level, body composition, environmental temperature, and exercise efficiency can affect actual calorie burn by ±20%. Use these estimates as guidelines for planning workouts and tracking energy expenditure, but remember that consistency in physical activity is more important than perfect calorie counting.
